The Western Flyers honor Western swing music, the first music genre indigenous to Texas, and are the official State Music of Texas. Western swing is infused with songs from many cultures – the violin/fiddle came to Texas from the British Isles; jazz, blues, and gospel from the African-American population; mariachi and conjunto from the Mexican people; the polka and waltz from German and Czech ancestors and the Cajun French Fiddle and accordion music from Louisiana. The award-winning Flyers (Ameripolitan ‘Western Swing Group of the Year’, Academy of Western Artists ‘Best Western Band’, Texas State and National Fiddle Championship awards) along with Grammy Award-winning telecaster master Redd Volkaert’s virtuosic playing, old school professionalism, and showmanship help keep audiences engaged and toes tapping.
